How to Make the Crochet Flame Stitch

by M. J. Joachim

This is a lovely open weave pattern that would make a beautiful lacy skirt, lamp shade, fashion accessory etc. It’s easy and fun to work, and also works up fairly quickly.

Foundation: Make a multiple of 10 chain stitches (+2 more chain stitches)

Step 1: Make 2 single crochet in 2nd chain from hook
Step 2: Chain 3, make 1 sc in 4th chain from hook
Step 3: Chain 3, make 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook
Step 4: Chain 3, make 1 sc in 4th chain from hook

[Repeat Steps 2 - 4 across row - your pattern looks like this, Steps {2, 3, 4, 2, 3, 4, 2 etc.}

Step 5: Chain 1, turn; make 1 sc in 1st sc; chain 1

Work first Step 6 in 2nd chain 3 loop from hook.

Step 6: Make 1 joined double crochet:

a. yo, insert hook in desired stitch or space; yo, pull up a loop
b. yo, draw through 2 loops on hook (leaving 2 loops on hook)
c. yo, insert hook in same space; yo, pull up a loop
d. yo, draw through 2 loops on hook (leaving 3 loops on hook)
e. yo, draw through 3 loops on hook

Step 7: Chain 3, repeat Step 6 (4 more times) in same space, so you have 5 joined dc with 4 chain 3 loops between them, in the same space

Step 8: Chain 1, make 1 sc in 2nd sc from hook (between next 2 loops of chain 3 spaces), chain 1

Step 9: Repeat Steps 6 & 7 in 2nd chain 3 loop from hook

[Repeat Steps 8 & 9 across row, ending with chain 1 and 1 sc in last sc in row]

Step 10: Chain 7, turn

Step 11: Make 1 sc in 2nd chain 3 loop from hook; chain 3, make 1 sc next chain 3 loop - you are working in 2 center chain 3 loops of previous flame

Step 12: Chain 3, make 1 triple crochet in next sc; chain 3

[Repeat Steps 11 & 12 across row, ending with 1 triple in last sc of row]

Step 13: Make 1 sc in 1st triple, chain 1

Step 14: Make flame stitch (Steps 6 & 7)in center chain 3 space, above previous flame; chain 1

[Repeat Steps 13 & 14 across row, ending with chain 1 and 1 sc in 4th chain of last chain 7 in row]

Repeat Steps 10 - 14 for continuous pattern

The flame stitch crochet pattern really lights my fire. I hope you come up with lots of neat projects for it. Thanks so much for visiting and commenting on Lots of Crochet Stitches today. I’ll see you again soon.

  1. That is really pretty. I see it making a beautiful shawl, too. Maybe in black with some sparkly stuff in the yarn...
