Purple Star Doily 052713

by M. J. Joachim

It took several days of mulling this doily pattern over in my mind, before finally working it out with thread and hook. Obviously you can make your doily any color you want and rename it accordingly. I used a size D crochet hook and size 3 doily thread.
Size 3 thread is a good thread to make light, close-knit garments and warmer weather items. From my experience, most doilies are made with size 10 or finer thread. Size 3 is suitable for coasters and works well under potted plants.
As a side note, this doily could technically be finished. However, I want a larger doily, so I’m going to put it aside and think about my design for a while more, so I can make it bigger, which is why I didn’t finish off in the display picture for this post. You can make this doily as is, or start it and wait to see what else I come up with to make it bigger.
Step 1:  Chain 3, join with slip stitch to form a ring; chain 3 (counts as 1st dc); make 14 more dc in center of ring; join with slip stitch to top chain of 1st dc in round
Step 2:  Single crochet in next stitch; *Chain 11, single crochet in 3rd dc from hook
[Repeat Step 2 from * 3 times; chain 11, join with slip stitch to 1st sc]

Step 3:  Single crochet in front loop only of next 5 chain on chain 11 loop; make 3 sc in 6th chain and 1 sc in last 5 chain of loop
[Repeat Step 3 for each chain 11 loop; join with slip stitch to 1st sc in round]

Step 4:  Slip stitch through each of the next 5 stitches; make 3 sc in next stitch (center of 3 stitches on point of star)
Step 5:  Chain 10, make 3 sc in center stitch of 3 stitches on next point of star
[Repeat Step 5 three more times; chain 10, join with slip stitch to center stitch of 3 stitches of next point of star]

Step 6:  Slip stitch in next stitch; sc in next chain 10 space
Step 7:  Make 3 half double crochet in same space; make 9 dc + 3 hdc + 1 sc in same chain 10 space
Step 8:  Make following sequence in remaining chain 10 spaces around
{1 sc + 3 hdc + 9 dc + 3 hdc + 1 sc}; join with slip stitch to 1st sc in round
Note:  Star will bunch up a bit in center of doily at this point. Lay flat and gently stretch stitches to keep shape even while working

Step 9:  Chain 1, single crochet in same place
Step 10:  Chain 3, sc in 2nd stitch from hook
[Repeat Step 10 around, ending with chain 3 and joining with slip stitch to 1st sc in round]
Step 11:  Single crochet in next chain 3 space; chain 3, sc in next chain 3 space around, ending with chain 3 and slip stitching to 1st sc in round
Step 12:  Slip stitch into next chain 3 space; chain 1, sc in same place
Step 13:  Chain 3, sc in each chain 3 space around, ending with chain 3 and joining with a slip stitch to 1st sc in round

Step 14:  Chain 1, sc in same place, make 2 sc in next chain 3 space
Step 15:  Make 1 sc in each sc and 2 sc in each chain 3 space around, ending with a slip stitch to 1st sc in round.
Optional:  Finish off. Weave in loose ends.
Or you can stop here and wait to see further instructions as I make this doily bigger.
