This pattern can be made with various weights of yarn and sizes of pipe cleaner. Choose what works best for you, based on the project you’re trying to create. Use these instructions as a general guide to make your own unique carnation flowers.
You will need:
1 crocheted star – the same color as your stem
6 small granny squares – 2 rounds each
Pipe cleaner for stem
Step 1: Make 6 granny squares – 2 rounds each
Step 2: String star and then granny squares on top of one end of your pipe cleaner; fold over end of pipe cleaner to secure; stagger corners of squares for edges.
Step 3: Fold bottom end of pipe cleaner up and twist it, leaving end off to the side.
Step 4: Fold side back to stem for leaf
Step 5: Single crochet around pipe cleaner with green doily thread – I used size 3 for the stem and size 10 for my granny squares, in the photo.
Weave in loose ends.
Note: There are many choices for pipe cleaner available. You may decide to use some fluffier pipe cleaner, and opt not to single crochet around your stem. Let your creativity be your guide and make the carnation that suits your fancy best.
