French Square Crochet Tutorial

You simply won’t believe how easy it is to make this fancy French Square crochet motif! The center is simplicity at its best, and the sides and corners use common stitches I’ve shown on this blog many times before. By breaking the pattern down into the following, easy to follow steps, you’ll discover how quickly these pretty little motifs fill your basket for so many new and exciting crochet projects.

Step 1:  Chain 6, make a ring by slip stitching into 1st chain.
Step 2:  Chain 4 (counts as 1 dc + ch 1, make 1 double crochet + 1 chain in center of ring (11 times) to create 12 spokes with 1 chain between each.  Slip stitch to 3rd chain of 1st chain 4.

Step 3:  Slip stitch into next chain 1 space
Step 4:  Chain 3, make puff stitch > yarn over, insert hook where indicated, yarn over, pull up a loop (4 times), yarn over, draw through all 9 loops on hook, in same space
Step 5:  Chain 2, make puff stitch in next chain 1 space
Step 6:  Chain 3, triple crochet in next dc, chain 3 (corner made)

Step 14:  Picot > chain 3, slip stitch in 1st chain
